Good to know in Portugal
- Monthly (pós-pago) contracts need a NIF and usually a Portuguese IBAN for direct debit. Prepaid (pré-pago, top-up by carregamento) SIMs need no NIF; take your passport.
- MEO, NOS and Vodafone discount their contract plans for 24-month loyalty. DIGI, UZO, WOO, Amigo and Moche sell cheap SIM-only plans with no loyalty.
- DIGI is by far the cheapest: unlimited data for €6. It runs its own newer network, so check coverage where you will live, especially outside cities and on the islands.
- UK calls are not part of 'national' minutes. DIGI charges about €0.02/min to UK mobiles; check other providers' international rates first. EU roaming rules don't cover the UK, so check UK roaming too.
Prices checked 11 Oct 2026. Prices include IVA at the mainland rate of 23%. IVA is lower in Madeira and the Azores, so bills there can be a little cheaper. MEO, NOS and Vodafone prices assume the usual €1/month e-invoice and direct-debit discount. Providers change prices and offers often, and not every plan is sold at every address, so check on the provider’s site before you sign up. We don’t take commission and no provider pays to be listed.
