About TheGlobaLocal
Free, sourced guides and calculators for British people moving abroad, and coming home again.
What we do
TheGlobaLocal helps people moving from the UK to the UAE, Australia, Canada, the USA, Spain and Portugal. There are 328 guides and 39 calculators, arranged in the order you need them: researching, making the move, living there and moving on. Each destination covers both ends of the move: visas, money, schools and renting over there, and HMRC, your State Pension and your UK home back here.
How we write and check guides
- Official sources first. Every guide lists its sources, and fixed figures such as fees, tax rates and visa rules link to the official page they come from.
- Estimates are labelled. Typical ranges, market prices and our own estimates are marked as such, so you can tell them apart from fixed rules.
- Dated. Every guide shows the date we last checked it (the most recent check: 24 Oct 2026). We re-check guides against their sources regularly and when rules change.
- Plain English, for British movers. We explain how things differ from the UK, with prices in local currency and pounds.
- Corrections are welcome. If something is wrong or out of date, tell us and we’ll check it and fix it.
How we stay independent
There are no ads and no affiliate links, and nobody pays to be listed in our guides or our handy apps and links. Services are listed because our guides mention them, official ones first.
Your privacy
The calculators run in your browser. Nothing you type is sent to us unless you ask us to email you the results or sign in to save them. Our privacy policy explains the rest.
Ask a Local
Ask a Local is our community questions and answers, starting with Canada. It’s in beta, and a moderator checks every post before it appears. Posts are members’ own views.
Information, not advice
Our guides are general information to help you understand your options. They aren’t legal, tax, immigration or financial advice. Rules change, so check the official source before you act, and speak to a qualified adviser about your own situation. Our terms of use have the details.
