What are the cooler months like, and how do we make the most of them?

The cooler months bring city breaks, skiing and some of Spain’s best-known festivals. Autumn can also bring sudden torrential rain on the Mediterranean coast, and many homes are colder indoors than people from the UK expect.

In 30 seconds

  • Autumn storms can cause flash floods on the Mediterranean coast. The DANA of 29 October 2024 killed more than 220 people in the province of Valencia, so take orange and red rain warnings seriously
  • Many homes are heated room by room, often with electric heaters or butane bottles. A 12.5kg butane bottle costs €18.84 at the regulated price set on 15 September 2026
  • Sierra Nevada, near Granada, plans to open on 28 November 2026, and the Pyrenees resorts open over the winter. It’s also the season for the Christmas Lottery, the Three Kings parades and Carnival

Autumn storms and floods

On 29 October 2024 torrential rain during a DANA storm flooded towns around Valencia. The official count in the province reached 221 dead. Many victims were found in homes and garages, which shows how fast water rose at ground level. Flash flooding can happen in other parts of Spain too.

  • Check AEMET’s rain and storm warnings, especially in autumn. Yellow, orange and red mean the same as for heat
  • In an orange or red warning, avoid travel, stay out of garages, basements and underground car parks, and move to a higher floor if water rises
  • Don’t rely only on an ES-Alert message on your phone: in 2024 it came after towns were already flooded. Follow AEMET, 112 and your town hall
  • When you rent or buy, ask whether the area or building has flooded before, and whether there’s a garage or ground floor at risk

See summer for how ES-Alert works.

Keeping warm

Don’t assume a flat has central heating. Some homes are heated room by room, with electric heaters, air-conditioning units that also heat, or portable butane heaters, and butane is still widely used in homes and rural areas.

  • When you view a flat, ask how each room is heated (calefacción) and how much the bills were last winter
  • Butane is sold in 12.5kg bottles at a regulated maximum price, reviewed every two months: €18.84 from 15 September 2026, about £16. The government has capped it at €19.55 until 30 June 2027
  • Rugs, thick curtains and draught strips help in a rental. For your rights if a rental is cold or damp, see renting a home
  • At work, offices must be at least 17°C

Snow and skiing

Spain has real ski resorts. Sierra Nevada, in the mountains above Granada, has 142 runs and 21 lifts and plans to open on 28 November 2026. In the Pyrenees, Baqueira Beret in the Catalan Pyrenees sells its 2026–2027 season pass at €1,300 (about £1,100) if you buy before 1 November. Opening depends on snow, so check before you book.

On mountain roads, a reform of the traffic rules approved in June 2026 bans overtaking when snow makes driving difficult, and you must keep to the right-hand lane. Check DGT road conditions before you set off. Temperatures in the mountains can change quickly, and altitude sickness can be a risk on the highest peaks around Granada and Huesca.
