The partner at home
If your partner has the job, you can lose your work, routine and friends on the same day. Here’s how people make it work.
In 30 seconds
- You can work on a family visa, but you need your own work permit through an employer
- Give your week a shape from week two: one fixed class, sport or volunteering slot
- Keep your career going and have money in your own name
Your visa and your options
| What it means | |
|---|---|
| Your visa | A family residence visa, sponsored by your partner |
| Working | You need your own work permit, applied for by an employer |
| Freelancing | Some free zones issue freelance permits, often with their own visa |
| Remote work for a UK employer | Check UK tax, your employer’s rules and whether you need a UAE permit first |
| If their visa ends | Yours is cancelled too, with a grace period to leave or switch visa |
The first three months
- Say yes to every invitation, even the awkward ones
- Pick one fixed weekly anchor: a class, a sport or volunteering
- Update LinkedIn to the UAE or take a short course. Paid work here, including freelancing or consulting, needs your own work permit or freelance licence first
- Have your own bank account and access to money in your own name
- Plan the first summer before June: who travels, who stays
Finding your people online
Facebook and WhatsApp groups for partners new to Dubai, and for your area, are often the quickest way to meet people in the same position. Use them to find a first coffee or class, then meet in person. Making friends and building a network.
Talk it through before you go
- What will each of us do with our days in the first three months?
- Can the partner at home work? Which permit would that need?
- Whose money is it? Set up access to accounts for both of you
- How often will we fly home, and who will visit us?
- What would make us come back early, and how would we decide?
If it’s harder than you expected, tell someone early: your partner, a friend at home or your doctor. Many UAE health plans include support for mental wellbeing, so check what yours covers.
What to do next
- Talk through what each of you will do with your days
- Check which permit you’d need for the work you want
- Find one group or class to join in week two
