Getting paid
| Salary account | Your pay goes into a UAE account through the Wage Protection System. Since 1 June 2026 it is due on the 1st of the month |
| Salary transfer | Many banks waive the minimum balance if your salary is paid in |
| Credit cards | Banks ask for a salary certificate. Entry-level cards typically need about AED 5,000 a month or more |
| Rent | Landlords usually want post-dated cheques, so ask for a chequebook |

Opening an account
- Wait for your Emirates ID (some digital banks let you start with a passport)
- Bring your residence visa and a salary certificate or employer letter
- Choose a salary account, or one with a minimum balance (often around AED 3,000; Emirates NBD charges AED 26.25 a month if you drop below)
- Order a chequebook if you’ll rent
Credit starts from zero
- Your UK credit history doesn’t transfer
- The AECB keeps your UAE score, from 300 to 900
- Pay cards and loans on time from the start
- Check your score through the AECB app
Cheques and debts
| Bounced cheque | Not a crime since 2022 if it’s for lack of funds, but it can be enforced directly through the courts |
| Still a crime | Stopping a cheque or emptying the account without a legal reason: a fine of at least AED 5,000 |
| Debts | Unpaid loans, cards or rent can lead to a travel ban |
| Check | Dubai Police app, or call 901 |

Before you commit: the regional situation. Conflict involving Iran has disrupted flights across the Gulf in 2026. The FCDO does not advise against travel to the UAE but asks people to be ready for disruption. Read the FCDO travel advice (last updated 24 July 2026).
